Vision Loss FAQs

What causes sudden vision loss?2022-01-10T06:28:27+00:00

Some of the common causes of sudden vision loss include eye injury, eye trauma, etc. Sudden vision loss occurs when blood flow is blocked either when passing towards or from the retina, and in conditions where the retina is pulled away from its usual position at the back of the eye, also referred to as retinal detachment.

Can vision loss be cured?2022-01-10T06:46:08+00:00

Most cases of visual impairment can be prevented through various medical interventions but there is currently no way of curing vision loss caused by various eye conditions. Vision Loss occurs when there is severe and irreversible damage to the eye.

What are the types of vision loss?2022-01-10T06:47:32+00:00

According to The World Health Organization, there are different classifications for low vision and legal blindness i.e.

  • Mild vision loss or near-normal vision: 20/30 to 20/60
  • Moderate visual impairment or low vision: 20/70 to 20/160
  • Severe visual impairment or low vision: 20/200 or worse
  • Profound visual impairment, or low vision: 20/500 to 20/1000
  • Near-total visual impairment or low vision: Less than 20/1000
  • Total visual impairment or blindness: No light perception
Is vision loss reversible?2022-01-10T06:51:35+00:00

Vision loss in most cases is irreversible, such as when caused by eye conditions like glaucoma. In some cases, surgical procedures can help slow down the progression of the condition and prevent further harm. It is highly important to get regular eye examinations by an eye specialist for early detection of any signs or symptoms.

Do glasses improve eyesight?2022-01-10T07:21:58+00:00

Eyeglasses have the ability to improve eyesight but cannot entirely counter the effects of low vision. However electronic glasses such as IrisVision are ideal for people with vision impairment as it provides a wide range of software lenses that improve visual acuity as well as features that help users stay entertained such as watching TV and connected through social media.
